Sachin's world record Reactions

Tributes poured in from all quarters hailing Tendulkar's feat of becoming the first batsman ever to score a double ton in ODI'S.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar: There is just no question about that. He is the greatest batsman the game has ever seen. See his record! Who else has got 90-plus centuries, 1700-plus runs in ODIs and 13000-plus runs in Test cricket? He is comfortably the greatest batsman ever. He should aim for more. Maybe a Test innings of 450 or a ODI knock of 250. And then he himself wants to win next year's World Cup. There is a little boy in Tendulkar who wants to keep playing. That spirit keeps him going. It's absolutely incredible how he keeps going. A lot of others with his record would have had called it enough. But I guess there is no word called enough in Tendulkar's dictionary. I think he should go for the triple century in Test cricket. This is something he doesn't have but he is very capable of. This is well within his reach and he should go for it.

Kapil Dev: It's his dedication and passion for cricket that sets Sachin Tendulkar apart. He is sincerity personified. He has made sacrifices in his life, there is a lot of dedication involved and he is very passionate about achieving something. He is like us but it's his mental toughness that sets him apart. He knows what exactly he is doing and he is strongly determined and focussed. He will bring more laurels to the country.

VVS Laxman: The 200 in Gwalior is a benchmark for others to follow. There will be a lot of players who believe they too can make 200 in an ODI. But I can tell you only special players can achieve the feat. Tendulkar's love for the game is unmatched and he still plays with the passion of a child. What makes him so hungry for runs is that he is never satisfied. Now, I guess only Lara's 400 is left for Sachin to surpass. I would be really happy if Sachin goes past 400 in Tests. It'll be nice if he breaks Lara's record.

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar on SportsCenter: What comes through his performance over the years especially after 20 years of international cricket is the will to just go on, whether it’s a one day innings or a T20. I don’t think he went into bat at Gwalior thinking that he has a chance to get a double hundred there. I think he seriously started batting for the double hundred when he was in his 190’s. Until then, he was playing shots and when he passed his hundred he was not aiming for a double hundred.

Spin legend Shane Warne on his Twitter page: Yes, yes, yes! Well done Sachin my friend. Congrats and well done! (It's) awesome."

Australia T20 captain Michael Clarke: His record speaks for itself. I can't say I'm surprised. He's probably the greatest batsman I've ever seen play, live. His record speaks for itself. I can't say I'm surprised. I didn't watch any of it but I'd like to get back this afternoon and see some highlights. He's a wonderful guy and someone I not only enjoy watching on TV, but I've loved having the opportunity to play against him as well. He has got so much class. His greatest strength is the longevity, to be able to be so successful at a young age and to still be doing the same thing 20 years on. He made his (Test) debut at 16 and he's still as good as ever, if not better. We're blessed to still have such a great player playing this game.

Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar: It's an amazing feat to get 200 in a day and that too off only 147 balls. It shows his mental and physical toughness. He's a player who does not throw away his wicket once he's set. He always places a huge price on his wicket.

IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi on his Twitter page: Sachin - the greatest ever player ever - without any doubt. I salute Sachin...world's greatest sportsman. We can see him only rise. (He is an) inspiration to us all. He is the best.

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara: What an innings it was! He came close to achieving it twice. I always felt that Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya are capable of doing that.

Former Test player Bapu Nadkarni: Whatever record is seen to be impossible to achieve, he makes it possible. That's all I can say. It seems as he's getting older, he is becoming more and more mature. No wonder Sir Donald Bradman saw himself in the way Sachin bats.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit: We all Delhiites join every Indian in celebrating this memorable achievement of Sachin Tendulkar. We all are proud of Sachin, who played a marvellous inning today against South Africa. Further, we are confident that he will continue to make world records. His innings will be remembered for all time to come.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda: Sachin's masterly innings of unbeaten 200 at Gwalior against South Africa in the second ODI has scripted cricketing history and done India proud. This batting genius has scaled new heights and put the Indian team on a new pitch of confidence. It augurs well for the World Cup next year.

Pakistani hockey players Rehan Butt and Sohail Abbas: We saw the match since I had nothing to do after our practice session. We all clapped after he scored 200. Cricket has never seen a player like him and will never see. Even after playing for 20 years, his passion for the game is an inspiration for us. We all take inspiration from him. The entire team watched his innings.

President Pratibha Patil: Sachin Tendulkar has yet again re-written the record books of cricket, by climbing yet another Mt Everest of the game.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh: Sachin has led by example and that all Indians are proud of his achievement.

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar: I am sure members will join me in conveying our heartiest felicitations and congratulations to Sachin Tendulkar for being the first cricketer in history of one-day cricket to score a double century. This is a source of inspiration for budding cricketers of this country. We convey our best wishes to Sachin Tendulkar for his future endeavours.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi: On behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu I convey our good wishes to you on creating a world record by scoring a double century in a one day international at Gwalior. We are highly delighted that you have surpassed all previous records in this regard.
